A Thai woman who defrauded more than 16,000 people and swindled 27 billion rupees has been sentenced to 141,078 years in prison. It has been reported that this is one of the longest prison sentences ever given in world history.
She was believed to have even duped members of the Thai royal family and scammed billions of rupees.
The story reveals a tale of a skilled con artist who, despite being sentenced to an astronomical prison term of 141,078 years in 1989, served only 8 years in jail.
The woman, whose name is Chamoy Thipyaso, established a fraudulent investment company in the 1980s and successfully tricked 16,231 people into investing. She managed to amass more than 27 billion rupees, much more than the initial investment.
In a historic Thai court ruling in 1989, she was sentenced to 141,078 years in prison, which is considered to be the longest prison sentence ever given to an individual in world history.
According to daily reports, Chamoy started a savings scheme in 1960 under the name of a company. At that time, she was an employee of the Thai government’s Petroleum Authority of Thailand.
Under the guise of an investment scheme, she lured people into investing money by promising high returns and created a bond of trust. However, the investments turned out to be illegal and fake, causing losses for thousands of individuals in Thailand, as well as some in India.
She used her fraudulent company named Chamoey Fund to deceive several high-ranking individuals, including members of the royal family, and manipulated the names of various members for her own gains.
In reality, she had connections with some individuals in the Royal Thai Air Force. By impersonating officials, she managed to convince investors of her company’s legitimacy and gained their trust, leading to thousands of people investing in her scheme.
Some members of the royal family and military officers also fell into her trap by investing substantial amounts in her company. However, after discovering the illegitimate nature of her company and activities, they sought government assistance to recover their losses.
After the exposure of her fraudulent company, the government shut it down and pursued legal action against her. She was eventually apprehended and held in a secret location by the Air Force, and a case was filed against her. In 1989, she was sentenced to the record-breaking prison term of 141,078 years.
However, after serving just 8 years in prison, Chamoy was released. Why? Because a new law was enacted in Thailand that prevented any convicted person from being held in prison for more than 20 years for fraud and deception cases.
Remember, Chamoy’s 141,078-year prison sentence, recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest prison sentence ever, ended up being just 8 years in reality.
