The Himalayas are called the third pole of the earth. The Himalayas include the Tibetan Plateau, the Hindu Kush, and the Tianshan mountain range. Due to climate change, increasing temperatures, and changing rainfall patterns, 10,000 glaciers have melted here in the Himalayas in the last 30 years.
Thousands of glaciers have been formed due to the rapid melting of glaciers. Such glaciers are dangerous for the lower coastal areas of the Himalayas. Glaciers look beautiful on the surface, but when they explode, they create terrible destruction. Glaciers have been exploding and causing huge losses from time to time and this trend has been increasing in recent times.
A frightening fact has also been revealed in the study. Between 1981 and 1990, 1.5 percent of Himalayan glacier eruptions have increased to 2.7 percent between 2011 and 2020. In other words, the rate of glacier explosion has doubled every decade. This is a dangerous sign for the people living in the Himalayas and its lower regions.
Researchers have identified 5,535 such glaciers in the Himalayan region, which can prove to be very dangerous for the countries of this region. These glaciers can explode at any time, and this can lead to glacier explosion induced floods (GLOF). Among them, 1500 lakes are very dangerous, and they can explode at any time and cause great destruction in low coastal areas.
According to researcher Professor Wang, when these glaciers explode, it is estimated that at least 55,805 buildings, 105 existing or planned hydropower projects, 194 square kilometers of arable land, 50,500 kilometers of roads and 4038 bridges will be destroyed. Apart from that, at least 200,000 people may die due to these incidents.
